There is work always work in that game, got a few mates that always have work and do well out of it and both are thick as shit. Office work will suck the soul right out of you get out why you still can.

Re: Changing careers
young woody,
I'm nearly 50,I've done alright in construction but had more than my fair share of grief most days as a subcontractor specialising in RC Frames.
I have no idea how old you are but if I could do my early life again I would chose something I had a passion for.
Clothes, music, food, travel and fuck knows there are loads of other industries where there is money to be made.
No disrespect to painters and decorators(I know a few subbies that have done well)but it's a big world.
Don't get stuck in a shitty office job and let life past you by.
All the best.

I thought poles were mandatory when it came to barbers.

Re: Changing careers
This sounds like whimsical unrealistic short sighted stupidity Woody. I would advise against it on the grounds that there isn't that much money in it, it's really hard graft that you are unlikely to be used to in an office and you're only good until your body gives up on you, probably around 50. That's a lot of years to style out with no career to speak of.

Yeah offices are boring, but so are most jobs eventually, especially getting up at ridiculous am to do manual labour.

The Mrs' uncles were all painters and decorators. Signed on all winter and worked indoors on the side then signed off in the summer.
Would come round on a Sunday and decorate a couple of rooms in about 4 hours proudly telling us he would charge punters three full days work for 2 men for the same job.
One thing is they are all piss heads and if you've ever stood painting a room all day you'll understand why. It's the only way to get rid of the taste of paint

''There's not much worse for your health than doing no exercise.''

Well, apart from smoking. That's worse for your health than doing nothing. And drinking. And eating burgers. And bacon. And curries. In fact, just about everything worth doing.

Re: Changing careers
Yea I know what you mean. There's something really tiring about being sat at a desk for seven hours a day, it just ain't natural. (I used to work on sites as well)

Darby_ 7:21 Tue Mar 28
Re: Changing careers
I do that already, bruuno. I'm still youngish, so I can work reasonably hard now, but later I'll take it easier. Staying reasonably active is the main thing. There's not much worse for your health than doing no exercise.

Re: Changing careers
Do it woody

Darby - if you do something physical you're more likely to fuck your body for your later years. Why not just spend 40 mins every evening in the gym?

Darby_ 7:13 Tue Mar 28
Re: Changing careers
I'm thinking of doing something physical and hopefully outdoors. I want to stay fit as I get older.

Re: Changing careers
Of all the trades I think painting and decorating would be the worse option
It's the worse paid on any site and you have the most competition as loads of lads just say they are painters because it looks easy
Which if you are decent it isn't

The downside of being a tradesman is you're potential earnings are limited unless you have a business and employ others, plus when you get older sitting in a nice office may look a better option than being on site

Good luck with whatever you do

A mate of mine retrained as a barber. Yes, we all laughed but once he was up and running, which didn't take long, he could pull in £300 gross on a good day. He has his own place now with two people he employs and a chair he rents out. Okay it's working on a saturday but he just stands up talking about football/politics/birds all day long. He loves it. He considered the plumbing thing but was worried about his joints and the poles.

Make sure you've got at least 6 months living funds behind you before you jump ship. I also recommend you sign up with a few agencies to go temp/contracting while you're sorting a direction out.

Abroad is good, even with basic office skills.

What will you be wearing in your new job?

Ag Ag Ag!!!

All good suggestions, I gave up an Area Director job at Barclays to start my own business when I was 37. If you need to do something Woody because you are unhappy the unhappiness will only get worse no matter on the cash/bonus's/mercs they throw at you. Trust me.

Woody, good luck to you if you find that pen pushing does not rock your boat. There are several good bits of advice on this thread so plump for a trade and make the best of it.
